The aftermath of Needsititis...

I did it. I bought couches. Correction: I bought A couch. And 2 chairs.
They are neither chocolate brown nor leather. HOWEVER. They are sage green and microsuede. Which I find as a colour, slightly more calming, and as a material, a whole lot more cuddly. They more than likely will not survive more than 3 years, but I have accepted this and moved on from it. Like a good little furniture purchaser, I sprayed the couch and chairs down with that fabric protector stuff two nights in a row... Desperately hoping it will keep the jam-fingers at bay.

And here is a peek ;)

annnnnnnd

Mucho Bettero than....

*SHUDDER*

So the Bubonic Plague couches have not yet been destroyed. I am not sure when we will be burning them (or if we even will be...) But I can assure you that if we do, there will be photos !!!

I will be acquiring a few new peices here and there to add to the "country" ness of the room, as it just is not quite "country" enough for me yet. ITS A COMING

Text-a-holic vs Autocorrect

Good Morning Steve Jobs, way up there in the sky.

I'd first like to thank you for, like, the most bestest greaterest invention EV-ER! The iphone!! Without it, I surely would not have made it this far in life. And taht last line was completely serious....

I have a nasty bad habit of "random texting". It's chronic. It's hilarious. It's occasionally not met with the same enthusiasm by the receiving party. Raspberries to them I say!

If you are reading this, and you have received more than one single text message from myself, you will know exactly what it is I am talking about....

Actual conversation....

Me: I hate mondays!
Unnamed friend: But it's Saturday?
Me: Fully aware... but tomorrow is Sunday and the following day is Monday... I was just thinking about how much I hate Mondays
Unnamed friend: Have you ever been tested???

Actual Conversation #2

Me: Epic fail putting the open chocolate bar between my legs while I drive !!!!!
Multiple unnamed friends:  Lol

Me: Attention, this is the captain speaking... We've run out of coke and me mateys are quite parched!!
Unnamed male friend: What the hell are you talking about. Who is the captain. What does parched mean. Where are you?
Me: Do you consider yourself pretty? Cuz you better be with that brain.....

So anyway, as the "Queen of Random", I take pride in my ability to completely confuse the common man with my moment-to-moment randomness. It catches people off guard, and the wonderful thing about texting is that you cannot actually "hear" the person, so texts are completely devoid of human emotion or tone. Excellent. The same two texts could be read completely different ways, such as this one

Me: They arrested her mom!!!!!!
Mom: Why would they arrest her mom? I thought it was her that did it
Me: They arrested her, mom!!!!
Mom: oooooh. ok.

Moms are GREAT texters. Here's a hilarious little screenshot of an actual conversation  with my mom...

To tell you the truth, I felt really bad. But to tell you another truth. I laughed out loud when I realized what had transpired.... Im evil like that....

Oh and then there is the autocorrect function. I really don't know where I would be today without autocorrect. It has supplied me with endless amounts of entertainment :)

And

Honestly.... that's good stuff. Does anyone else have such wicked bad texting issues? I really don't think its possible that there is another me, or worse than me, floating around out there. Although I would love to meet said person. :)

So in conclusion, I thank all of you receivers of randomness for not just going ahead and blocking my number, and putting up with all of my pointless texts and updates through out the day.

And thank you auto correct for endless laughs. And thank you iPhone for confusing the crap out of me!!!

Thank you, Steve Jobs

Bad Case of Needsititis

So I woke up this morning thinking to myself that I really NEED new furniture. My living room furniture is ghastly, and Im quite sure that if I didn't Lysol it every day, we would all be infected with the bubonic plague. It's old. It's dirty. It's had it's day over and over and over again. It has cuddled babies, toddlers and 5 year olds, as well as adults who just really wanted to fall asleep watching that darn movie. It's seen more than it's fair share of spills and smears, and Im quite sure that if I was to explore beyond the visible reaches of the upholstery, I would see years and years of accumulated goldfish crackers, chocolate chips and the occasional butt-end of a peanut butter and jam sandwich. It pains me, it really does, that I infact need to say "Goodbye!" to the old couches of yesteryear....

......And say hello to BONDED LEATHER. It's wipeable, it's fashionable, and it's chocolate brown. It's happiness in a sofa. Plain and simple.

It has taken me a looooooong time to finally get off my wallet and make the move. But I think it will be a good one. I might actually stay home once in a while.

But this brings me to my new issue. New couches, HOORAY!! But how about that 1992 Tube TV that I am going to be watching from said couches? Is it time to part with that as well? Can I wait a few months? How about till Boxing Day? Probably not. I have a bad case of Needsititis, which is an acute onset swelling of the Needsit portion of the brain. It can feel like it is a chronic issue, however, if you push through the pain, the swelling eventually subsides, and you become ok with your life the way it is, materialistically speaking.

So while, in all of this, it sounds as though I have major entitlement issues (Don't we all??), I really just needed (yes, needed) new furniture. I could go through the list of justifications, starting with

1) I have icky sticky 2 year olds, TWO OF THEM!!

2) Leather wipes easy

3) Leather looks pretty

4) They're chocolate brown

5) I got a smokin' deal on them

6) My life has been so chaotic that I believe I do deserve a comfy place to rest, and my "boat bed" just ain't the place....

7) I'm a big girl and I am in control

I will update with photos. Before and afters of the living room. Before and afters of the couches. And during the burning (er, cremation) of bubonic plague couches.... :)

True Colours....

A wise man once told a friend of mine,
“If someone shows you their true colours, don’t second guess them, take them for what they are”

Holy HELL has that changed my outlook this week in a HUGE way! I’ve always been the one to say “that’s not REALLY them” or “They’re so sweet 75% of the time, the other 25% I can deal with”
After this past week, I think it’s safe to say I will not be colour blind anymore J I saw some pretty awful “true colors” from quite a few people. And I am happy to say I have “deleted” their information from my iPhone so there is no going back. Because we all know that I live by my iPhone. And it doesn’t matter if I wrote it down somewhere, if it’s not in my iphone it does not exist! TAKE THAT!

As far as I go, Im going to work on owning my true colours and letting them shine. I have neglected myself over these past few years and I am making a pre-New Year Resolution to love myself :)

OH and.... I got new boots :)
Let the colours shine on !!

Acceptance....

If there is one value I hope to instill in my children more than any other, it would be acceptance. Without acceptance of any amount, I think the world would be a whole lot scarier. I'm not blind to the fact that there is a severe lacking in the acceptance department by humanity as a whole, but I believe that at a fundamental level acceptance is a learned skill. It is not one that you are born with, but rather, taught to you at an early age, and formed and molded throughout your years. Like many other things, if acceptance is not a cornerstone in your parenting, your children will not have the self image and self respect required to make the life journey. Without getting all technical mumbo-jumbo on you, I will try to explain my point of view.

If a child is not taught that it is OK to be different from others, they will not only bully other children but will have internal thoughs of disrespect towards themselves. For example,  if Billy's different because he's bigger than the rest of the kids, then I must be different because I'm one of the smaller.

This seems to me to be one of the more crucial errors we as parents make. Children are not deaf; they hear us talking amongst other parents about these types of things. They hear our views and adopt them as our own. This is what I like to call "Parenting Fail".... And I'm no angel ... let it be known. With this in mind, think of how well they hear and SEE us as parents talking to or about each other? We all to often forget, through our adaptation to spoken language, that as a species, our initial language was BODY language. We don't always realize that what we say with our bodies speaks volumes more than what we say with our tongue. "Do as I say and not as I do" .... is garbage. Our children are much more basic than we are. They are still learning and developing their language, and are basically programmed to read our body language before they're able to fully understand our spoken language.

If we teach our children to accept love, we must teach them what an acceptable measure of love is. We must teach them that love is a gift that is given. Much like trust, Love can easily be broken. And without proper care and attention, Love will not heal properly. Accepting broken love is not acceptable. Does this make sense??
Our kids know when we are hurting. They see it in our faces, in the way we carry our bodies, as well as in the tone of our voice. We are unknowingly teaching our children it is acceptable to feel the way we feel. We are teachers, they are students, and we are teaching them to accept our acceptance of something unacceptable.

I know it may sound as though I am putting my jaded attitude towards love and marriage onto my children, but it was gonna happen anyway. Atleast in this way it is a gentle approach.

A continuation.....

After my blog post yesterday, I thought of a few things I really felt I needed to add.

My cup wasn't always empty. Alot of credit is owed to Ben for filling my cup alot of the time. But it was a slow decline in volume and eventually I realised that my glass was empty about 80% of the time. And I'm sure I was to blame for his being empty too...

Second, the outpouring of comments from my friend's and family in regards to this post ACTUALLY filled my cup up yesterday so I must say

THANK YOU!!!!!

The bottom of my wine glass....

I've done some soul searching over the past few months and have learned a few new things about myself and about others. It seems as though so many of us are searching for the same thing. Someone to love and be loved by, someone to cherish and be cherished by, someone to serve and be served by, and someone to be there in the thick of it all. It doesn't seem like it should be so hard, does it? They are very simple values. They seem attainable. You see the young couples with the smiles and soft words between them, and you see the happiness in the eyes of the seniors who have been with their love for 65 years or more.

My beliefs and values have changed with the rolling tides of my life. Battered and beaten by angry storms, my heart has ached and felt the excruciating, crushing pain of loss. Glowing with pride and joy, my heart has pounded with excitement and love. I knew so early on in my relationship with Ben that we would get married and have a family. I knew with all my heart that he was the man for me. I knew we would be the ones who would make it through the brutal storms. I knew it.... I knew I knew it. Until one day I became confused. And not in a "Brown shoes or black shoes" sorta way. In a deep, contorted, dark and twisty kind of way. The kind of confusion that makes you start to question your own sanity, your own clarity and your own worth. Do I love him enough to stay? Do I hate him enough to go?

At first, it was easy to stuff the questions back down into that dark and twisty place. And close the door. And lock it and throw away the key. But like Edgar Allan Poe's Tell-Tale Heart, I couldn't ignore them. They pulsed and surged and throbbed in my mind and as much as it hurt to think about them, I finally stopped denying myself that oppurtunity. It didn't take long before my heart took over and decided for me.

 I had to leave......

The choice I made did not make me a bad person. I see many other couples struggling to survive, but out of fear of judgement and rumors, they stay. They stay in pain and in anguish which only grows heavier and heavier every day. The pain is visible on their faces and the anguish evident in their eyes. I chose what I chose based on my own beliefs and values. I believe I am worth more and deserve more, and I value my own self image and self worth far too much to allow it to disintegrate.

The more you deny yourself the chances to be happy, the more hurt you feel. You hope and pray and tell yourself it will all work out and that you're just going through a rough patch. Which, understandably, is very common and true with many relationships. There are always ups and downs. However, if the ups don't cancel out the downs, you end up with a negative balance at the end of it. And I'm pretty sure we're all on the same page as far as negative = bad, positive = good. Or so I hope anyhow.

Marriage should be a give and take relationship. You give, you take. Yes it is true that you should give more than you take, because otherwise it would be selfish. However, if one person is consistently giving of themselves and not getting enough in return, they will feel as if they are slowly emptying.

Picture a cup, for example. Ok OK! A wine glass. I will fill my wine glass with wine. I then take that wine and pour half into my husbands cup. I pour some in my children's cups (relax, its a metaphor!)  Oh and some in my mother and father's and stepmother's cup. And my sister and brother's cup. Oh and friends'. Pour some in the work cup as well, because no matter what I do I can't get away from that one. At the end of the day, I have little more than a sip of wine left in my cup, which, unless it is replaced, will not be enough to stretch to do it all again the following day. And in your marriage, the one person who should help fill that cup is your husband, or your wife. Unfortunately, I was leaning more on my family and friend's to fill my cup than I was on my husbad. My cup was nearly perpetually empty. No one likes an empty cup, everyone HATES an empty wineglass.

So I have decided, while staring through the bottom of my empty wine glass, that in order for me to be truly happy, I must budget my wine and giving half of it away to someone who doesn't return the favor is counter-productive. I will no longer give half of my wine away, but better, save it for myself and my children.  I will save it for someone who desperately wants to fill my cup.

So what I am offering up with this blog post, is the chance to take a glimpse inside the heart of someone who chose to leave. It's not often that people will take the time to sit back and listen to why someone is leaving their marriage. It's just so much easier to assume the worst and to believe the rumors.

I will always hold an outstretched hand to those fighting the same battle and enduring the same pain. The hand I offer is one of empathy and support, and not apathy and judgement. Heck, I might even give ya a little of my wine :)

Learning....

After A While
Sydney Peyton

After a while you learn the subtle difference
between holding a hand and sharing a life
and you learn that love doesn't mean possession
and company doesn't mean security
and loneliness is unversal.

And you learn that kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes open
with the grace of a woman
not the grief of a child

And you learn to build your hope on today
as the future has a way of falling apart in mid-flight
because tomorrow's ground can be too uncertain for plans
yet each step taken in a new direction creates a path
toward the promise of a brighter dawn

And you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and nourish your own soul
instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers

And you learn that love, true love, always has joys and sorrows
seems ever present, yet is never quite the same
becoming more than love and less than love
so difficult to define

And you learn that through it all
you really can endure
that you really are strong
and that you do have value
and you learn and grow
with every goodby
you learn.....

I can't get no satisfaction....

"For me, singing sad songs often has a way of healing a situation. It gets the hurt out in the open into the light, out of the darkness. "
Reba McEntire

Thank you, Reba. Thank you for being an amazing woman. Thank you for singing those powerful, sometimes scandilous (think "Fancy") songs that stir up so much emotion within people, the only logical thing to do is belt it out right along with you. Oh and thanks for being a red head :)

I've branched out a bit from my country - ness and started rocking out to the Galaxy Hit List (pop) on satellite. Its hilarious. I rock out while vaccuming. I just hope my neighbours don't hear. Or see......

Parenting....

"Each generation has been an education for us in different ways. The first child-with-bloody-nose was rushed to the emergency room. The fifth child-with-bloody-nose was told to go to the yard immediately and stop bleeding on the carpet. "
Art Linketter

It's amazing just how bang-on this quote is. As a mom, and as someone who works in the Emergency Room, I see this kind of thing all the time. The panicked looks painted on the faces of the new parents when their 4 month old coughs, the fear stricken parents of the 2 year old boy with the staple in his finger, and the utter hopelessness in the voice of the mom whos toddler just drank what was left of the bubbles. And then, ooooh and then, the complete opposite end of the spectrum. The parents who roll their eyes and scoff while they explain that their "youngest" fell from the treehouse and what the hell was he doing going up to the treehouse when he knew that it's Tuesday and Tuesday is their middle child's day to play in the tree house. OH! and then they're oldest ... *insert dramatic story here*
It's great. I love it. I revel in it. Mainly because I am already that parent. Don't get me wrong!! I love my children and care about them to the end of the earth and back. However... I have seen some shit! And after that, somehow, the bloody nose that has occurred time and time again because my daughter just WILL NOT keep her finger out of it just doesn't say "ER" to me.
I have been referred to as a "Garden Parent". I don't think I'd want to be anything else than a Garden Parent. My children spent 8+ hours outside everyday in summer and I believe they grew physically, intellectually, and emotionally stronger because of the amount of time they spend outside with friends. When they come in at night, their feet are black because who needs shoes, really. Their hair is matted and there is the occasional blood smear on some limb. I am amazed everytime I bathe them at the colour of the water after, and have discovered that if you put the two of them in the tub together, their splashing and swimming acts as an agitator and they're cleaner than if I bathe them seperately :) Oh the things we learn.

Sunday Reflection

Ahhh Sunday. The day of rest. The day with which God sat back and reflected on what he had accomplished. I get that I'm not God, but why can't I have a day of reflection? Instead, I have to wake up at 6 am to be at work at 7 am. If this isn't unjust I just don't know what is.

Don't get me wrong, I love my job. However, I also love weekends. I wish that every day was a weekend. Wouldn't life be grand?

My weekend started out well. Took the kids to the ferry to do the exchange with Daddy. This went smoothly except for the fact that the ferry was late.... shocker!

Emma and Mommy got a little squirrelly while waiting for the "fewwy Boat" to come in....

And then, Saturday. Another day of work. I spent the time I had trying to clean up this little episode...

Which was caused by this.... (excuse the mouthful of crackers, we're still working on the "dont chew with your mouth open" concept...)

Who normally looks like this...

During the "clean up", I learned that diaper cream is essentially grease, which doesn't lift out of carpet unless you are equipped with a turbo industrial carpet cleaner which utilizes razor blades. Needless to say I don't possess such a tool so yes, the diaper cream will be staying with us until I can hire someone who DOES.

I am now back at work (on break of course... hee hee). Does it end? Im REALLY looking forward to my 3 days off next weekend. :) I shall use that time to reflect on the sure-to-come chaos of this week.

Signing off,

Pooched

My ship has landed.....

Good evening all!

I have officially arrived to the world of blogging. May God help you all....

I am fighting the urge to catch you up on my last 26 years of life. I think, instead, I will blog about the day I am blogging, and along the way I will insert interesting factoids about the past... *Insert terrible Twilight Zone music here*
I guess I will have to ease myself into the blogging world, as I am drawing a blank on the hundreds of interesting events that occurred today.

Except this. My darling son. Benny. He has a few challenges. One of which is balance. This poor child has none. He was absent that day.

My poor little man. He was walking ever so innocently, and lost his balance and fell over.. over... over.. and into the side of some... shall we say.. "patio furniture" and gave himself quite the goose egg.

Back to the story at hand. This is not Benny's first goose egg. The first one was delivered by the edge of the bathtub about two months ago.
